I visited Kruger, Zambezi and Hwange National Parks and used the Kruger Guide app which did an outstanding job of covering all three regions. The app provides a user-powered live sightings board of Kruger, and personal trip sightings log. Their beautiful markings and pink color blend perfectly with the African sunset reflecting on the water. We only spotted one of these from a distance during our trip. When you come face to face with one, it becomes clear why they are the storks depicted as delivering babies. They certainly are big enough to be able to carry one. Despite being one of the biggest birds on the planet, they can amazingly perch in the highest treetops because they only weigh about 20 pounds. We saw about twelve at various distances throughout our trip. These birds are everywhere. A bit like a grander version of NYC pigeons. The green pigeon sports a dreamy blend of greens and grays that is just lovely. It makes sense why the Lion King made Zazu a yellow hornbill, and why a group of them is referred to as a “party.” These cheeky, fearless characters are literally EVERYWHERE. We spotted three while on our trip, but only got up close and personal with this one on the last day. Identifiable by their longish straight beaks and compact heads. I was blown away by how many different species and how prevalent they were in Kruger National Park. Many of them have wonderful sectional markings and striking blue wings. The rainbow of colors on these birds is breath-taking. Don’t turn away if you spot one! These are smaller, and much harder to spot but they are around if you keep a keen eye. They are also incredibly rare. By the last day of our safari I had given up hope, when we turned a bend and two emerged from the grasses of Hwange National Park. These graceful, long-legged terrestrial raptors are endangered and you are very blessed if you spot one. Their singular look and size had caught my attention in the guide book but I had given up hope of seeing one when – ironically – just moments after the kori bustards made an appearance, out came two secretary birds who crossed the road right in front of us. In the Princess’ bedroom with us was about twenty other people eager to see some action. But it turned out my cheeky husband was to be the one to draw out the Princess that night. We were staying in the carriage house next to the main inn and in a room on the ground floor with the daughter of the owner and a few friends on the night this ghost came to tell us her sad story. She was a guest there years ago in the heyday of the inn and had fallen in love with a man that worked there. Before the evenings panels and bar fun began, I broke off from the crowd to wander the main floor a bit. The hotel is big and very cool and I wanted to find a quiet spot to put out my maglite to see if anyone wanted to chat. I headed to the music room. It’s about a forty foot by forty foot classic concert room. The warm wood paneled walls and wood flooring combined with the low light transported me back to the turn of the century when the hotel was built. And we were lucky enough to have a chance to hang out with her during a group hunt one night. About twenty of us were in the basement of the concert hall with a flashlight out on a table when Lucy made her appearance. As we were told, Lucy is thus named because of her love of the song “Lucy in the sky with diamonds.” But it wasn’t the Beatles she was into that night. It was Janis Joplin. After the Hayes family sold the home in the 1950s, it was used as a local boarding house until about the 70s when it was pretty much abandoned and, sadly, allowed to get run down. In the late 80s the city purchased it, and by the 90s they began restorations. My guess is that the man I talked to either ran/managed the boarding house or lived in it and just loved the place enough to want to stay and watch over. It was an open forest of rhythm and stone and symbol. I am always look for unique ways and places to see the natural world and have one-of-kind encounters. I’m a big time animal lover. And I’m really not selective. Once on the set of a video shoot for work, we had a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach wrangler who offered us the chance to hold the big bugs. I was first in line, completely fearless and loving it. There are unforgettable ways to be completely awe-inspired by nature all around us, you just have to open your eyes and mind and be willing to see it! I’ve been ghost hunting for over ten years now, and I’ve had some very interesting encounters with spirits at hotels, historic sites and even a graveyard.
